President-Elect Obama stated in a speech that OSHA and MSHA (the Mine Safety and Health Administration) could expect to receive higher levels of funding under his administration. The increased funding would be used largely to increase enforcement staff to facilitate increased inspections. Obama has also stated that OSHA would not allow contracting out to reduce compliance by employers. Much of the increase in funding to OSHA would be supplemented through increased fines to employers. One would expect OSHA personnel to be under pressure to increase revenues from fines.
